O’s Notes: Machine Language is an adventure, a story illustrated by Animation: bassist Bill Laswell, the late Bob Belden (sax, fl), Pete Clagett (t), Roberto Verastegui (keyboards), Matt Young. (d) and vocalist/narrator Kurt Elling. The machines in question are children and their toys, the latter being sophisticated computers, video games. This was the final recording for Belden, the composer of this material. He gave the band a lot of latitude and Laswell takes full advantage with solos and a foundation that grounds the free flowing improvisation. It seems like a retrospective view of today and tomorrow with music that has a perspective from outer space. Things get a bit more grounded on “Genesis Code” and “Datk Matter” with more rock fusion DNA but they remaining steeped in another universe. This is an unexpected approach and a memorable encounter worth checking out.
