O’s Notes: The late 1970s found sax master Dexter Gordon partnered with Rufus Reid (b), George Cables (p) and Eddie Gladden (d). Manhattan Moods was released with six cool tracks, now released with two additional bonus cuts that fit in nicely. The significance of this album is that it was timed with Gordon’s return to the NY jazz scene after 15 years in Europe. His absence was a part of the political nightmare that haunted many musicians during the preceding 15 years – the lack of a cabaret card. Without going into the detailed history, we can say that Gordon was thrilled to rejoin the NY jazz scene and he did so while still in his peak performing years. This CD captures some of his best playing.
