O’s Notes: Markstown is a series of creative, free jazz with intermingled vocal and instrumental riffs. The recording captures two live performances, the first at St. Mark’s Church-in-the Bowery August 21, 1968 benefiting Operation Airlift Biafra. The second concert was a few weeks later at The Town Hall in NYC. The Purple Why was formed in the late 1960s and led by bassist Steve Tintweiss. James DuBoise (t), Mark Whitecage (t-sax, fl), Judy Stuart (voice) and Laurence Cook (d) round out the band with Trevor Koehler (b-sax) and Amy Shaffer (vocals) joining for the second half. DuBoise whispers in the background alongside Whitecage’s squawks with gentle punctuation from Cook on “How Sweet”. There is also great work from Tintweiss on ”Space Rocks“ along with Cook. Definitely a sign of the times.
