Jazz Ruler Type: funk
O’s Notes: This is a collection of contemporary jazz that recaptures the spirit of Grover Washington, Marcus Miller and David Sanborn. It is funky R&B that has far more engagement than a lot of the elevator music (too-smooth jazz) that dominates the airwaves on NAC stations today. No, it’s not a retro album. This is new music produced, arranged and mostly written by keyboardist Jason Miles. He accentuates his points by employing today’s best contemporary jazz players. Gerald Albright (sax), Herb Alpert (t), Hiram Bullock (g), Russ Freeman (g), Jeff Kashiwa (sax), Wayman Tisdale (b) and Jeff Golub (g) are among the many artists who contribute to Coast to Coast. This is certain to be one of the year’s best contemporary releases.
