O’s Notes: There is an exotic feel on Mechanics led by saxophonist Sylvain Rifflet. He forms a quartet with guitarist Philippe Gordiani, percussionist Benjamin Flament and Jocelyn Mienniel (fl, kalimba). We liked the groove on “Origamis” and “Phantoms”, two of the more embraceable selections. The music is very illustrative, almost like a painting but with audible paints. This is something very different on the jazz scene, a statement in modernism.
