O’s Notes: Great music starts with great musicians and Weiss (cl) assembles a team of first call players who show up ready to jam in the studio. They work thru thirteen charts on the first take each time. The spontaneity is energizing and this unit is seamless. They are swinging right out of the gate on “The Theme”. Although Weiss is cynical in the liner notes suggesting that jazz is dead, he sure is swinging on this set. Special guest Sam Most (fl), guitarist Ron Escheté, and Bill Cunliffe (p) are just too damn good to make substandard music. These arrangements are very good and the session is hot. We challenge Mort to stop bitching, keep playing and maybe create a few new tunes. And we’ll enjoy the music!
