O’s Notes: This is a cool combination of ballads and burners from trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. He is joined by Danny Grissett (p), Dwayne Burno (b), Gerald Cleaver (d) and J. D. Allen (sax). This band is a team that is cohesive and shares a commitment to playing, composing and performing straight-ahead jazz in its purest elements. Each of them contributes a tune to this effort though the bulk of the songs were written by Pelt. The result is a strong balanced set highlighted by the opener “Backroad”, a real swinger. This is their debut on High Note and hopefully the first in a long relationship.
