O’s Notes: Veteran drummer Alvin Queen assembles a fine cast of musicians to perform ten jazz and blues classics. There are some Latin flavors with “Cape Verdean Blues” and some organ-based numbers like “I Got A Woman” led by Mike LeDonne (B3) with Peter Bernstein (g). We really liked “Backyard Blues” and “Let Us Get Into The House”. Jesse Davie (sax) and Terell Stafford (t) add punchy brass for further dimension with Neil Clark (perc, conga) and Elias Bailey (b) solidifying the rhythms. Alvin roars on Oscar Peterson’s “Sushi” and wraps up the set with his own composition, “The Drum Thing”.
