O’s Notes: Charles Mingus was a prolific bassist who was able to keep time, anchor the rhythm section, and even lead the melodies as he does here on “Laura”. Mingus Three is an excellent sampling of his work, placing him in the center of the action. Pianist Hampton Hawes tickles the ivory opening “Back Home Blues” followed by a relaxed but impactful solo from Mingus with drummer Danny Richmond maintaining the pace. There’s a cool take on “Summertime” and a hard swing on “Yesterdays”. There are only six selections, but the trio makes it memorable.
