O’s Notes: Finnish pianist and composer Frank Carlberg expands his quintet to a large ensemble including vocalist Christine Correa and Paul Lichter (spoken word). Conductor JC Sanford orchestrates the band including standout musicians John O’Gallagher (sax), Brian Landrus (sax), Alan Ferber (tb), Kirk Knuffke (t), Chris Washburn (tb) and Michael Sarin (d) to name a few. The music adds a bit of structure to Carlberg’s usual edgy free jazz with inspiration from the works of Thelonious Monk.“Monk Dreams, Hallucinations and Nightmares“is a rich project that is unique, entertaining and meaningful, some of Carlberg’s best work.
