O’s Notes: Contemporary jazz saxophone player Steve Cole takes a different path on Moonlight presenting us with a collection of passionate ballads in front of a lush string section. His inspiration comes from some of the great crooners he heard as a child including Sinatra and Bennett. He plays with full emotion that has a similar impact on his audience. Fans will recognize and appreciate his warmth. His band is solid including Mike Logan (p), David Mann (sax, fl) and guest Russell Ferrante (p) on “Angel”. They add spark on “Undun” and intensity on the mid-tempo “You Don’t Know Me”. But it is mostly romance and Cole is up to the task warming your heart and soul culminated with a stirring arrangement of “Long And Winding Road”. We expect to hear more along these lines from Steve going forward and anxiously anticipate it!
