O’s Notes: This session is swinging from the opener “Four” with Weiss leading on clarinet. It’s not long before Most joins in on tenor sax, playing in a hushed mode but keeping it moving and spirited. Ron Escheté (g), Roy McCurdy (d) and Luther Hughes (b) are a strong, tight rhythm section that provides all of the right stuff. Each of them takes solos that are noteworthy. In fact the solos are very good throughout the set as is the song selection that includes some of our favorites “Night In Tunisia” and “Poor Butterfly”. The musicians are seasoned and their sound is great. We agree with Scott Yanow’s assessment in the liner notes; this is Mort’s best session to date.
