O’s Notes: The late tuba player, Jim Self released the third volume of his My America series (posthumously), 3 – My County, with music that sounds fit for a marching band in the early America days. The band is a large ensemble including Brian Kilgore (d), John Chiodini (g), Bill Cunliffe (p), Mike Valerio (b), Chris Woods (fiddle), Steve Fister (dobro, slide guitar), and Doug Livingston (pedal steel guitar). Special guest appearances Stanley (Basset Hound howls) and an unnamed horse (whining) set the mood on the opener and closing. They include the My America Choir on “Sixteen Tons”. This session is more country/western than jazz.
