O’s Notes: Gil Scott-Heron is a poet, a singer with a deep baritone voice, a writer and a legend from the 1960s who was never afraid to tell it like it is amidst the African American revolution. He is a cult hero of sorts. This live session at New Morning in Paris during July 2001 find the master still on top of his game. He opens by himself on the Fender Rhodes singing “Blue Collar”. By the third song his band joins in and the groove begins to take effect. The Parisians started to rock just in time for “Angel Dust” and Gil turned it up a notch all the way through to the finale “The Bottle”. Great show.
