O’s Notes: Funkito is a Japanese funky fusion band led by bassist Nozomu Ito. They live up to their name and then some with catchy beats from the rhythm section that includes Katsunari Torii (p) and drummers Keita Okada or Masaharu Ishikawa. The melody comes from Tomonao Hara (t) and Makoto Oka (sax, t). There are thirteen selections with lots to enjoy. Most of them are upbeat with the exception of mid-tempo fusion jams like “Flatbush Avenue” and ballads like “You’ll be free, sis!”. We also liked “Brick Wall”, the cool jazzy “Driving into south” and “No zoom up!~Don’t waste your time” featuring vocals by Satoko Hongo. This is a solid effort with lots of depth.
