O’s Notes: It is easy to enjoy the sweet tones from Tom Harrell’s trumpet and flugelhorn. Number Five is billed as a quintet but they perform in solo, duo, trio and quartet modes as well. The lineup is the same as his last few releases with Wayne Escoffery (sax), pianist Danny Grissett, Ugonna Okegwo on bass and drummer Jonathan Blake. This time they mix in a few standards to complement Harrell’s original compositions. They perform half of the songs impromptu leading to a free jazz feel. This is a departure from his last winning effort but there are some elements that are continued favorably I might add.
