O’s Notes: This is another of the On Contemporary series released by Craft/Concord capturing the best of legendary jazz performers. Pianist Hampton Hawes is the center of attention here and he delivers a resounding performance in several configurations. He performs six selections with his trio that includes Red Mitchell (b) and Chuck Thompson (d), along with his Quartet, Quintet and all-star bands. He had that West Coast Swing that kept the audience engaged. We especially enjoyed his sizzling performance on “Broadway”.
