Jazz Ruler Type: Bebop
O’s Notes: Mal was a masterful pianist who played both bop and free jazz formats. He developed his signature playing with Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus and John Coltrane. This session was recorded in 1982 with Joe Henderson (sax), David Friesen (b) and Billy Higgins (d). They play six well-developed songs. You can hear the Mingus influence on “Herbal Syndrome” with Henderson playing outside of his normal bop style. This combination worked well with Waldron providing a strong sense of melody.
