O’s Notes: This is an excellent 2-disc collection of Miles’ recordings on Columbia during 1955-57. The personnel are outstanding including John Coltrane (sax), Paul Chambers (b), Philly Joe Jones (d) and Red Garland (p). The live version of “’Round Midnight” has Gerry Mulligan (bs), Zoot Sims (ts), Percy Heath (b) and Connie Kay (d). Rather than debate whether the surrounding musicians made Miles or he made them, Davis was always in the successful mix and these songs all have sizzle. Among the best cuts is “All Of You” where he swings nicely with his characteristic soft silky trumpet tones and that cool bop sound.
