O’s Notes: Conguero Poncho Sanchez fuses Latin rhythms with a 1970’s soul groove on the opener featuring Ray Charles (v), Fred Wesley (tb), Pee Wee Ellis (sax) and Billy Preston (B3). This combination playing that groove returns (less Preston) on “Mary Ann” and the horns show up on several other tracks, most notably “JB’s Strut”. Sanchez also sings James Brown’s “Out Of Sight”. He manages to include several tracks dominated with his usual Afro-Cuban beats. This is a nice combination of styles that is made even more enjoyable by the excellent sound quality on SACD!
