O’s Notes: This is the first collaboration of composer, keyboardist Richard X Bennett and saxophonist Matt Parker. They form a quartet with Adam Armstrong (b) and Julian Edmond (d). Bennett typically writes and performs modern jazz while Parker leans more towards free jazz. In this session Parker Plays X but his spontaneous improvisation surfaces in a complementary fashion, as on “Countertransference”. Generally, they swing hard as on “Bus 61”, and soothe us with ballads like “Semi Vintage”. The overall impact is positive notably on “Sagebrush”.
