O’s Notes: We truly enjoyed Somi’s“The Lagos Music Salon“(5/3) a few years ago and she’s back on the scene with“Petite Afrique“another winning session. She gets support from a talented team of musicians including Michael Olatuja (b), Etienne Charles (t), Keith Witty (g, keyboards), Liberty Elfman (g) and Marcus Strickland (tenor sax). The music is earthy, Afrocentric and original. The exception is “Alien” which is an adaptation of Sting’s “Englishman In New York”. Somi’s lyrics are thought provoking and meaningful delivered with exacting tone and complimenting musical arrangements.
