O’s Notes: The cool sound of the Hammond B3 continues to capture a slice of the jazz market, surviving the plethora of electronic keyboards introduced in the 1970s. A few players like veteran saxophonist Dawan Muhammad never let go and teamed up with Bobby Pierce (B3), Billy Higgins (d) and Calvin Keys (g) to record five track in 1991. Fifteen years later Dawan added six more tunes in a trio format with Tom Tonyan (B3) and Harold Avey (d). They are packaged together on Preachin To The Choir. We preferred the trio but both ensembles have merit. Muhammad ushers a bit of the past into 2014!
