O’s Notes: John Roney is a pianist in love with his trade. The happiness spills into his performance on Preludes, a solo effort that encompasses a broad spectrum from classical to jazz with a bias towards the former. His approach makes the music palatable to a broad audience and his mastery of the keys doesn’t leave us wanting more musicians. He opens with three Gershwin tunes moving to Debussy, Ellington, Chopin, Scriabin and concluding with Bach. Yes, that covers many styles with varied tempo and feel and Roney does well connecting the dots.
