O’s Notes: Joel plays tenor sax and Bruce mans the B3 establishing the base of a cool jazz quartet. The brass component swells on a few tracks to include Jay Collins (baritone sax) and Kenny Rampton (t). They put their own twist on “Love the One You’re With” including a done solo by guitarist Chris Votarello. It is blues time on “Don’t Play That Song” and they take us to church on “Spirit In The Dark”. Blue ballads like “It Ain’t Fair” showcase Joel’s warm tone. Most of the all-instrumental program is cool blues from the slow and savory “Rock Steady” to the electric arrangement of “What A Friend I Have In Jesus”.
