O’s Notes: This is an Afro-Peruvian sextet led by Gabriel Alegría (t). Laura Andrea Leguía (sax), Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón (perc), Hugo Alcázar (d), Yuri Juárez (g), John Benitez (b) and Ramon De Bruyn (b) make up the rear of the band. We liked the punchy brass accents and syncopated rhythms on “Piso 19” and the swinging dynamic groove of “Eva” best in a satisfying set. The cover of “My Favorite Things” is also dressed with Alegría’s Afro-Peruvian theme. Gabriel splits time living in Peru and New York. If you are lucky enough to catch him live you will not be disappointed!
