O’s Notes: This 1956 session features another of Miles’ famous quintets. John Coltrane (ts), Red Garland (p), Paul Chambers (b) and Philly Joe Jones (d) join Davis who plays a muted trumpet through most of the set. The title is somewhat misleading as these six tunes include upbeat tempos as well as ballads. We’d term it, Swinging With The Miles Davis Quintet! An unusual addition is some of the comments between Miles, the band and recording staff. This gives us a peak into the mood of the set. First rate.
