O’s Notes: Canadian oudist Gordon Grdina is back with his band Qalandar for his latest release, Reza. They are Reza Honari (Kamanche), Ali Razmi (Setar), Hamin Honari (Tombak, Daf), and Kenton Loewen (d). It was recorded live at China Cloud in Vancouver and is one of three simultaneous releases from Grdina along with ASH and Turnpike. The music is a worldly jazz-fusion that is enticing, exotic and engaging with a definitive contemporary Indian bent. “Gaza” and “Morning Moon” are highlights.
