O’s Notes: Harrell (t) leads a strong quintet with Wayne Escoffrey (sax), Danny Grissett (p), Ugonna Okegwo (b) and Johnathan Blake (d). These are established jazzmen who live up to their reputations in this tight unit. Harrell composed all of the music and it is full of intriguing melodies underscored by rich harmonies. They waste no time getting busy on “Storm Approaching” the first track. Harrell shares the stage and the audience benefits from an all-star performance. The pace slows for “Roman Nights”, a gentle ballad. Among the best of the rest are “Study In Sound”, “Agua” and “Bird in Flight”. Tom remains among the leading jazz trumpeters and writers on the scene.
