O’s Notes: This is Brazilian samba at its best. There aren’t many jazz harmonica players that can execute as well as Meurkens. He creates a thirst for extended listening. When he’s not playing his harmonica, he switches to vibes. Rodrigo Ursaia (sax, fl), Misha Tsiganov (p), Adriano Santos (d, perc) and Gustavo Amarante (b) are the core of an exceptional band. The warmth of the vibes accentuates the mood. The groove is exactly what you expect from Brazil: cool, refreshing and energetic. There are ten tunes, a mix of mostly originals with a few covers. The title track, “Mountain Drive” and “Spaceburger” are highlights. Hendrick was born in The Netherlands, raised in Germany and matured musically in New York, a cultural hodgepodge that enables him to embrace and expand on samba!
