O’s Notes: This live 1961 session was captured at The Blackhawk in San Francisco. Miles was in his pre-fusion cool set. That means muted trumpet playing complete melodies and he’s in total command of his game as is Hank Mobley on tenor sax. They share duties on the melodies while Wynton Kelly (p), Paul Chambers (b) and Jimmy Cobb (d) handle the rhythm. This is a top-notch 2-disc set including four sets of music. “So What”, “‘Round Midnight”, “Neo” and “Autumn Leaves” are some of the best.
