O’s Notes: Barnhart is a student of jazz having honed his trumpet skills under the influence of Shaw, Armstrong, Hubbard, Little and Brown. He plays a New Orleans style of happy jazz on the classic “Giant Steps” and “Put On A Happy Face”. He also plays warm ballads and some rich blues like “Haley’s Passage”, one of six originals in the program. Barnhart is a professor of jazz at FSU and includes a few of his peers Bill Peterson (p), Rodney Jordan (b) and Leon Anderson, Jr. (d) in his rhythm section. Jamie Davis makes a cameo appearance singing “Young At Heart” for yet another dimension. Wynton Marsalis (t), Clark Terry (t), Ellis Marsalis (p) and Marcus Roberts (p) also participate in Say It Plain giving this project a heck of a lot of character backed up by exceptional credentials. They deliver an excellent performance.
