O’s Notes: Oumou is one of Mali’s popular songbirds. She sings about the life she lives including some of the social issues that plague her culture. She considers this a joyful album of hope and awareness. The rhythms are rich infusing traditional instruments with modern music. Oumou can blitz through the lyrics a fast as the beat rapper or soar with rich tones like an opera singer. The numerous contributing musicians are mostly Africans but there is an American contingent that includes Fred Wesley (tb) and Pee Wee Ellis (sax). Yes the lyrics are sung in native tongue but the liner notes include English and French translations that are easy to follow. We found this package to be a great intro to contemporary African music and it’s healing/soothing powers.
