O’s Notes: This is Garrett’s debut recording on Mack Avenue Records. It is a live session at New York’s Iridium. Kenny (sax) teams up with the legendary Pharoah Sanders (sax), Nat Reeves (b), Jamie Williams (d) and Benito Gonzalez (p). They play five lengthy compositions notably “Intro To Africa”. The contrast between Sanders and Garrett gives each tune an added dimension of character. It’s like a good guy/bad guy approach with Pharoah breathing raging emotions and Kenny preaching a bit more of a compromise. Both make strong emotional statements and when they play together we can feel the heat of the battle. The groove morphs from bebop on “The Ring” to a funky fusion on “Waynes Thang” broadening the audience.
