O’s Notes: Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico is home to the Sonoran Desert with heat, cactus, mountains, sunshine and dry, barren earth. That is where bassist Andrew Schiller grew up and he reflects on his memories for Sonoran, a nine part suite. The band is a quintet with Tony Malaby (t-sax), Henry Paz (b-cl), Ethan Helm (a-sax) and Matt Honor (d). They vary the pace and mood reflecting the various elements of the desert. Our favorites are “Wet Hair, Dry Hair” and “Thorny Flora” in a very relaxing set.
