O’s Notes: Mal’s work on piano is surrounded by excellent work on brass from Webster Young (t), John Coltrane (sax), Steve Lacy (sax) and Gene Ammons (sax). The collection goes back to a live set in 1955 and continues with many different sessions up to 1962. Waldron’s playing is dynamic and well pronounced on both upbeat bop tunes as well as ballads. But it is never too much. A fine anthology.
