O’s Notes: Rodney wastes no time getting funky opening the set with “Let The Music Take Your Mind” combining his guitar melodies with funky brass riffs and a solid tight bottom from Lonnie Plaxico (b) and Kenwood “Woody” Dennard (d). It is very apparent that Rodney has funk in his blood having played with James Brown, Jimmy McGriff, Maceo Parker. But he also knows bebop having toured with Dizzy and Chico Hamilton. The latter point should not be overlooked because his runs are far more complex than many smooth jazz guitarists are. In fact, he can burn as well as Benson, Montgemery and the best of today’s jazz guitarists. This recording is a live performance following his 2001 debut as a leader. It has unbelievable energy especially on the title track complete with its rhythmic rap. Some of the hits are “Soul Makossa”, “Summertime” and “Groovebone”. If this one doesn’t get your groove going, you may need to see a doctor.
