O’s Notes: Marshal Gilkes is a seasoned composer, trombonist and member of the WDR Big Band. He now resides in Germany but spent twelve years on the New York jazz scene prior to that. Sound Stories is his third release and he continues his rise to the top of the charts. They open up burning on “The Presence -Part 1” with and Tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin taking the lead. Adam Birnbaum keeps things balanced with soft stroke on the keys and Yasushi Nakamura (b) and Eric Doob (b) anchor the bottom. Gilkes mellows the groove on Part 2 starting a pattern where he leads the ballads and McCaslin cooks. It is a good formula leading to a well-balanced session.
