O’s Notes: Iron City is Charlie Apicella (g), Dave Matck (B3) and Alan Korzin (d). They include guest artists Stephen Riley (sax) over five tracks and violinists John Blake, Jr. and Amy Bateman, featured on one tune apiece. The session starts out cooking with “Sookie, Sookie” featuring Apicella and Blake leading a cool groove. The pace continues through “Sparks before they slow down to the mid-tempo “Blues in Maude’s Flat”. Things get a bit funky as Mattock steps forward on “Play It Back”. “Caracas” has a laid back Latin feel but things seem fluid when they burn as on “Sweet and Sounded” with Bateman. The music is vibrant and spirited top to bottom ending with Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” punctuated by Apicella who also stands out on the entire set.
