O’s Notes: Nick Fraser plays drums and wrote the music for his quartet with Tony Malay (sax), Andrew Downing (cello) and Rob Clutton (b). They start with a rather eclectic “Minimalism/416-538-7149” which serves as a strong indication of what follows. The quartet repeatedly tests the boundaries with spontaneous improvisation engaging the entire quartet. The moods range from anger to melancholic. We liked “Starer” and “Sketch #29” best.
