O’s Notes: Ian Carey is a composer, trumpeter and bandleader. He joins forces with a chamber trio featuring violinists Mia Bella d’Augelli & Alisa Rose with cellist Jessica Ivry. Lisa Mezzacappa (b), Joe Arkin (d) and Kasey Knudsen (a-sax) round out the band. There’s a sense of adventure and readiness for change that encompasses this session. Strange Arts looks forward and backwards simultaneously to arrive at a sophisticated jazz fusion with a large dose of spontaneity. “Nocturnal For Solo Violin” showcases Rose who stands tall throughout the session. We enjoyed Carey’s opening for “Unforeseen” and “Alien Anthropology”. Knudsen blends into the mix with a strong presence on “Rain Tune”. Ian’s trumpet melodies are a great complement as they take us through eight compositions in about an hour.
