O’s Notes: Delfeayo is one of the lesser-known brothers in the talented Marsalis family. He has produced dozens of jazz recordings and is also a fine trombonist with sweet mellow tone. Delfeayo also has a strong interest in literature hence this celebration of Shakespeare and Duke Ellington’s ‘Such Sweet Thunder’, the original tribute to the literary legend. Marsalis plays with a much smaller band than Duke, generally an octet. We prefer the clean transparency and openness of the smaller ensemble. All of the musicians are all up to the task including brothers Branford (sax) and Jason (bass cl, sax), Mulgrew Miller (p), Tiger Okoshi (t) and Winard Harper (d). Sweet Thunder is more than a redo of fine music; it is a transformed work with new life and it’s own peaceful swagger.
