O’s Notes: Thomas leads us through twelve swinging compositions in three different settings. There is a quintet with the late James Williams (p), Chris Conner (vibes), Frank Hauch (b) and Quinn Blandford (d), a trio with Louis Heriveaux (p) and Thomas Sauter (b) and the core quartet with Heriveaux, Sauter and Blandford. Heflin plays trumpet and flugelhorn on all tracks. His tone is warm and the notes are crisp. There are six originals and six excellent covers notably “Little B’s Poem” and “Bemsha Swing” with an excellent solo from Sauter. They really swing on “Sketch in Blue” and “The Organ Grinder”. We liked Symmetry, the collection and the bookend title tracks.
