O’s Notes: Sonny’s Quartet includes Red Garland (p), Paul Chambers (b) and Philly Joe Jones (d). This is Miles’ band without Miles! As Rollins was a regular with Davis, the musicians were very familiar with each other. Tenor Madness was originally recorded in 1956 refreshed here as an SACD to optimize sound from the original master tapes. The five songs are strong and include guest artist John Coltrane dueling with Sonny on the title track. We especially liked “Paul’s Pal” with a mild calypso beat and “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World”.
