O’s Notes: This is a formidable collection of Faddis tunes. There are gentle ballads like “The Courtship”, “The Fibble-ow Blues” with some creative scatting and a healthy exchange between Faddis (t) and Clark Terry (flugelhorn), and even a little bossa nova on “Laurelyn”. Afro-Latin beats are prominent on several tracks notably, “Teranga”. They also swing hard on “The Baron” and “Hey Lalo” The core quartet is leader Jon, Don Parson (d), David Hazeltine (p) and Kiyoshi Kitagawa (b). Guest artists include Russell Malone (g) Frank Wess (fl) and Abdou Mboup (perc). This is very nice!
