O’s Notes: 70-year-old Drummer Barry Altschul leads a trio with Jon Irabagon (sax) and Joe Fonda (b). These musicians are experienced and benefit from many performances together. They dance on the boundaries of six classics and three new compositions by Altschul with a cover of Carla Bley’s “Ictus”. This is mostly free bop but the prowess and mutual respect of the team makes it a rich listening experience packed with spontaneous but melodic improvisation.
