O’s Notes: Tarvos“is the second in the Ivo Perelman/Matthew Shipp series. Drummer Bobby Kapp joins Shipp (p) and Perelman (sax) to form a trio. There is no astrological tie of Saturns smallest moon (Tarvos) with the content of the album. Ivo liked the exotic sound of it as he likes his exotic 74-year-old Mexican American drummer, a musician who he resonates with in free jazz space. Shipp made a duo recording with Kapp in 2016 and the bond between the trio is evident. Ivo is more conventionally melodic in is 7-part session with several hints of “April In Paris” surfacing along the way. But rest assured, Perelman fans, it is still his signature avant-garde!
