O’s Notes: Rhea“is the fifth volume in the recent Perelman/Shipp series. Saxophonist Ivo Perelman takes the aggressive, agitated posture on sax while Matthew Shipp wraps his complementary fleeting piano accompaniment in the backdrop. Drummer Whit Dickey and bassist Michael Bisio round out the quartet, a rare configuration for Perelman. There are seven parts over 54 minutes and it is“a mix of rapid aggression and more passive, curiosity (slower tempo). The later is more approachable especially “Part 2”.““Bisio’s spirited walking bass line on “Part 3” imparts a hard bop feel. A foursome is not a bad thing!
