O’s Notes: Volume 3“in“The Art Of The Improv Trio“series features pianist Matthew Shipp and drummer Gerald Cleaver with leader/composer Ivo Perelman on tenor sax. This is a nine-part movement that we translate to be the story of a lumbering giant. He’s a peaceful man who awakens and gets his energy slowly. He stretches, awakens and clears his eyes getting ready for the day. There are times when he gets into and energetic mode letting out a squawk or two as on “Part 1.” But for the most part this is a gentle giant who is not aiming to hurt“anyone but coexist with nature and his peers.“The interaction between the trio is very supportive and reinforcing even when they drift into free improv.
