O’s Notes: The Artist is bassist John Lee’s debut recording and it’s a winner. He’s joined by pianist Miles Black, Carl Allen on drums, with producer Cory Weeds adding sax of 3 of the 8 selections. They skip along with a welcoming, joyful groove starting with Mulgrew Miller’s “Soul Leo”, and adding bouncy covers of “Softly As In A Morning Sunrise” and “Fabienne”. We also enjoyed Lee’s originals notably “Life Is A Beautiful Thing”.
